INALUM is a non listed state-owned company and completely owned by the government. INALUM was originally established in 1976 as a Joint venture company between the Government of Indonesia and Nippon Asahan Aluminium Co., Ltd (NAA). NAA is Japanese consortium of 12 Japanese investors, including Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corporation. In April 2014, INALUM officially become the government-owned corporation (BUMN) based on the Government Regulations No 26 of 2014. INALUM now has aluminum smelter plant in Kuala Tanjung, Sei Suka District, Batu Bara Regency North Sumatera. While its power plants is located at Paritohan, Toba Samosir Regency, North Sumatra Province.
INALUM also supported by 2 liason offices at Medan and Jakarta. INALUM also operates as a holding company for state-owned mining company in Indonesia. INALUM has 4 holding members; PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, PT Timah Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, and PT Freeport Indonesia.

Requirements
