Commercial Clerk - Jakarta
Basic Function of Position
- The incumbent serves as a trade promotion assistant, working with Commercial Service officers and Commercial Specialists in planning, organizing, and implementing trade missions, individual company Gold Key visits and in completing ICPs, IPSs, and smaller scale market research projects.
- Using market information and initial industry contacts provided by supervisors, identifies and contacts appropriate decision makers in local companies with the goal of making business matches for U.S. participating firms.
- For trade missions, prepares information kits for event participants and assists U.S. and host country representatives at the meeting sites.
- For all trade mission and Gold Key clients, conducts initial market research on relevant data, such as industry / service sector statistics, import tariffs, and competition, primarily utilizing existing data base systems.
- Works with Commercial Specialists in conducting research for ICPs and IPSs, identifying and qualifying companies with initial guidance from supervisors, then confirming company information, points of contact, and developing brief company overviews.
- Supports and participates in trade events organized by post. Maintains contact lists and contributes to the Client Management System (CMS) database information.
- A completion of secondary schooling level is required.
- Have at least three years of progressively responsible experience in business, government, or NGOs in the fields of marketing, trade promotion, economics, international trades.
- Level 3 (Good Working Knowledge) in speaking / reading / writing English and Bahasa Indonesia are required. Language proficiency will be tested. If you have taken a TOEIC or TOEFL test administered by ETS within 6 months, please attach the certificate.
- A good basic knowledge of local business firms, trade practices, restrictions, organizations and customs; of marketing and sales techniques; and of CS internal reporting requirements, operating procedures and regulations.
- Ability to meet and serve representatives of U.S. and host country commercial and business firms and other key personnel with tact and efficiency; skill in word processing and data manipulation (e.g. promotional campaigns, mailing lists, key contact lists), basic research and analytical skills; basic writing skills (e.g. responses to business inquiries, market insights).

Basic Function of Position
- The Political / Economic Assistants provide research, report, and counsel on a broad range of complex and sensitive political and economic issues that significantly impact US interests. She / he maintains senior level political and economic contacts throughout the consular district. Reports to the LES political / Economic Specialist and maintains frequent contact with the Political / Economic Section Chief and Political / Economic Officer.
Qualifications Required
All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.
- A Bachelor’s degree in a social sciences or Liberal Arts discipline is required.
- At least five years of experience in political and / or economic analysis, legal analysis, public policy, international organizations, journalism, development work, project / program management or university teaching is required.
- Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking / Reading / Writing Bahasa Indonesia and English are required. Native level ability in Bahasa Indonesia is required. Must be able to draft correspondence, report, and cables which would require limited editing. Must be able to clearly translate and interpret from English to Indonesian and vice versa, and be comfortable briefing in English. Language proficiency will be tested. If you have taken a TOEIC or TOEFL test administered by ETS within 6 months, please attach the certificate.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the structure and leadership of provincial and local government, and of key social, religious and human rights issues relevant to the USG in the Consular district. Ability to interact effectively and persuasively with key Islamic leaders. Strong grasp of US foreign and political / economic policy processes and objectives, including human rights objectives as they apply to Surabaya consular district. Ability to explain core US policy views to local audiences as appropriate.
- Superior analytical and drafting skills in English and Indonesian. Able to interact effectively with a broad range of top ranking contacts, working knowledge of word processing, electronic filing, and internet and social media search techniques. Strong ability to take initiative and work independently with general guidance. Strong planning, organizing, and implementation skills for complex projects and solid interpreting skills. Ability to represent the Consulate effectively through representational events. Able to deal effectively with media, including social media
